Anderson sequel stars Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Kim Coates, Shawn Roberts, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Spencer Locke, Boris Kodjoe, Wentworth Miller and Sienna Guillory.

Screen Gems also claimed the second spot with ‘Takers’, which added $6.1 million for a three-week total of $48.1 million.

BEVERLY HILLS, California – I first heard the name Wentworth Miller (which is a bit hard to remember, isn’t it?) from Kris Aquino who mentioned that name in my “body talk” with her when, asked what she did in her free time, she said that she and her son Joshua watched a lot of TV, among them ‘Prison Break’ in which Miller played the role of Michael Scofield, a caring brother who created an elaborate scheme to help his brother escape death row after being found guilty of a crime he did not commit.
“Wow, he’s my crush”, Kris exclaimed when I told her that I just did an exclusive Conversation with Miller at, as usual, a suite at Four Seasons during the ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ junket together with Milla Jovovich (who reprises her role as the deadly Alice) and Ali Larter. Written, directed and produced by Milla’s husband Paul W.S. Anderson, ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ (the fourth installment of the franchise, produced by Screen Gems, Davis Films/Impact Picture and Constantin Films, released locally by Pioneer Films, now showing nationwide), inspired by the popular video game, is set in a burned-out Los Angeles overrun by thousands of the undead, and Alice finds herself facing a threat she has never anticipated.
As a refresher, Kris gave me a three-CD package containing ‘Prison Break’s first season and it helped me complete this story.
Wentworth Miller was a main character for four seasons of TV’s ‘Prison Break’, but he knows his role as the new man in the ‘Resident Evil’ film franchise, starring Milla Jovovich and based on the popular zombie-shooting video games. “Milla’s the main event, I knew that going in, and was very appreciative of that dynamic”, says Miller, who plays Chris Redfield to Jovovich’s action heroine Alice in ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’, the fourth movie in the series opening in theaters today. “It was purely about the stunts and the physicality of telling that particular story, whereas with ‘Prison Break’, being one of the lead actors on this one-hour drama for four years, if I could be frank sometimes it got challenging being one of the guys pulling the cart. There was a lot of extra responsibility involved that sometimes competed with or even detracted from the creative process of acting on camera”. Nowadays, though, Miller is working behind the scenes as a fledgling screenwriter. So far he’s got two scripts – the horror/family drama ‘Stoker’ and its prequel ‘Uncle Charlie’ – that Miller says are “the most creatively satisfying things I’ve ever done, and that includes anything I’ve done as an actor”. We talked for an item on this weekend’s Who’s News page, but read below for more on his career shift and check out this behind-the-scenes ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ featurette with Miller, Jovovich and director Paul W.S. Anderson.
‘Resident Evil’ is a very popular thing for many gamers. Do you fall into that category?
I’ve never been a gamer. My parents really put an emphasis on homework growing up, so there wasn’t really time for video games or comic books. Now I feel at the ripe old age of 38 that I’ve pretty much missed my window of opportunity. [Laughs] I do get a kick out of being part of a video game franchise.
Atop most best-of lists of video-game-to-film adaptations, you’re sure to find ‘Resident Evil’, an impressive feat when you consider that Hollywood has had so little luck turning games into box-office gold.
Witness ‘Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time’, which saw a big budget ($200 million plus), a big studio (Disney) and a big name (Jake Gyllenhaal) declared one of the flops of summer 2010.
Then there’s ‘Resident Evil’, a franchise whose fourth movie opens today. According to boxofficemojo.com’s list of top movie franchises, the first three films have grossed $142 million, with ‘Resident Evil: Apocalypse’ the highest-grossing single film at $51.2 million. The HD trailer on YouTube – which makes the point of boasting that James Cameron’s Fusion 3D Camera System was employed in the filming of ‘Afterlife’ – has had more than 6 million views.
